The Story Pirates Present Digging Up Danger Story Pirates Jacqueline West Hatem Aly 9781635650914 Books Reviews

  • The Story Pirates’ Digging Up Danger is simply delightful! The first section, based on a story idea by Phoebe Wolinetz and written by Jacqueline West, is a suitably spooky mystery set in a Brooklyn flower shop which specializes in exotic and rare plants. Enter Eliza Stahl, a thirteen year old girl interested in the paranormal, and her mother, a botanist who specializes in identifying exotic and rare plants. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll, owners of the shop, have asked Mrs. Stahl to identify some of their plant specimens. The plot progresses with twists and surprises, helped along by Mr. Carroll’s corny, but funny, jokes and puns. The second section, written by Story Pirates Education Director, Quinton Johnson, introduces aspiring mystery writers to the twists and turns of producing a mystery. Readers can check in with the “Mystery Creation Zone” all through the story for clues about how to set up and write a mystery. All in all, Digging Up Danger is a fun read by itself, and also a wonderful teaching tool for creative writing in general, but particularly geared towards mysteries.
  • The book is exactly what you would expect from the Story Pirates. I thought my 5 year old would be too young for it, but she asked for it so many times that I bought it for her and she loves having it read to her.
  • We loved this book! I read it aloud to my six year old and we both had a great time. I even read ahead because I enjoyed the story so much.
  • My younger son has struggled to find books to become absorbed by but Digging for Danger has grabbed his attention and interest. His younger sister keep stealing the book too. They love the story lines, connections to the Story Pirates and all the fun extras.
  • So disappointed. We had to stop about 4 chapters in it was so boring and convoluted. The SP podcast is so good I don’t know what happened here.
  • We loved how different this book was from Stuck in the Stone Age which we also loved.
  • I loved this book!!! Great twisty mystery with funny jokes, a cool setting (an exotic plant shop!), really fun characters and the mystery creation zone (section of the book that teaches kids how to plot/write their own mystery) is REALLY well done. This gets five stars from me!!!!
