Author Max Miller spent many weeks at sea gathering material for his book, and presents his observations in an easy-to read fashion. Carrier! is intended to provide civilians with a glimpse into what life aboard these massive ships was like during World War 2.

"What is good about this book is that it gives an overall picture of what life is about on a Carrier. I would have liked to have known the name of the Carrier. I also would have liked to know if the piolets that ditched were rescued, and in what shape they were in when returned to the Carrier."

Carrier! Annotated Life Aboard a World War II Aircraft Carrier eBook Lt Commander Max Miller Reviews

  • I work as a docent on the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda CA. This book has given me a wonderful in site as to how the sailors and officers lived and fought an Essex class carrier. This book is well worth the read.
  • I was extremely disappointed by this book, and I probably should have paid more attention to other reviews of it. I was really hoping for something that took a comprehensive view of life about a World War II aircraft carrier. Instead, the entire emphasis was on the pilots and the flight deck, and not in a way that really told me much about what they did although it tried to make it sound exciting. I've often read articles that compare a carrier to a small city, and if that's the case, then this book focused strictly on the Main Street merchants. I wanted to read about the people who supported this enterprise the cooks, the engineers, the men who keep it under power and with heat, electricity and water. For my interests, there must be something else out there, but this book was a waste of time.
  • Interesting read of a first person viewpoint. No earth-shattering things to learn here but gives the view of the non-flying officer on a WW II carrier. It explains what life was like seeing planes leave the safety of the deck but not seeing them all return; hoping that those who did not had landed on another carrier either by mistake or by necessity. The book also shows the closeness of non-flying personnel to the airmen, the reason for the carrier's existence.
  • Not written about a specific carrier in the Pacific during World War II, but any carrier and crew who fought for our Nation. Max Miller describes in detail the life and times aboard a great fighting ship. Carriers by their nature operate differently than other war ships and Lt. Cmd. Miller tells the story of the men and their ship.

I read the version and am always disappointed by the typos present in these versions.
  • I might have been expecting something else but the book was a little disappointing. No actual battles, never really knew where the carrier was out in the Pacific, a lot of sailors and their jobs left out and finally, not interesting enough to not want to put it down. It was well written and the author knew his subject matter. Read it if you need to be occupied for a short time period.
  • A very good primer to learning the basic duties of many of the work preformed aboard a carrier. I served in a asw squadron aboard six cve carriers. I was a plane captain and recall holding on too the cross deck tie down slots during engine runups, to keep from being blown overboard. I have memories of mishaps similar to that depicted in this book. The depictions in this novel brought back many good times.
  • This fascinating time capsule is a comprehensive look at life at sea aboard a WWII aircraft carrier in the Pacific. It does an excellent job capturing the emotional outlooks of the crew during different aspects of a carrier in combat, including the aviators. It is an easy read, whimsical at times, and well worth it.
  • What is good about this book is that it gives an overall picture of what life is about on a Carrier. I would have liked to have known the name of the Carrier. I also would have liked to know if the piolets that ditched were rescued, and in what shape they were in when returned to the Carrier.

Rita Tupputi, Bologna

The Accidental Veterinarian Tales from a Pet Practice Philipp Schott 9781770414808 Books Reviews

  • I intended to just read a few of Dr Schott's stories from this collection every day but then ended reading them all in one long sitting! It was like trying to take just a few chocolates out of a box! There is an eclectic range of essays and anecdotes here covering everything from how going to vet school is like going to Hogwarts through to how to give a cat a pill and how to give an ostrich a pill! He lifts the curtain on many surprising aspects of the veterinary profession. Even non pet owners will find this "slice of life" fascinating. Above all, the writing is engaging and warm and, as other reviewers have said, he will have you laughing and crying. Highly recommended.
  • Mostly a diatribe or “poor us” stories about the life of a veterinarian. I don’t need to buy a book to be lectured to.
  • Like most teens, Philipp Schott did not know what he wanted to be when he grew up, but when it came time to enter college his father stressed the importance of choosing a field that would offer employment when he graduated. Veterinary medicine seems like a surprising choice, since Schott’s entire experience with pets consisted of one pet gerbil, but he liked zoology, and he liked cats and dogs, so what the heck! The result has been a career of almost 30 years treating small animals, a career that has enriched the lives of many animals and their humans and clearly brought fulfillment to Schott as well.
The Accidental Veterinarian is a collection of short pieces written over the past two years that tells Schott’s story from his decision to become a veterinarian to the present day. The essays cover his training, the practical experience of being a veterinarian, interesting bits of veterinary science, and stories of some of the more “peculiar” cases he has encountered. But those topics sound dull, and The Accidental Veterinarian is anything but. Schott realized early on that a love of people is as essential to success as a veterinarian as a love of animals, and this is a warm book as full of humanity as it is of cats and dogs (and gerbils). As Schott says, he has had “hardened-looking men confess that they cried more when their dog died than when their father died, and… lonely elderly women say that they have laughed more with their kitten than they have about anything else …for a very long time.” The main focus is on the people and animals, and I laughed a lot and teared up more than once. But I also learned some interesting veterinary lore, like the possibility that the frequency of a cat’s purr may encourage tissue healing, which could explain why it is beneficial for cats to purr when they are injured. As a cat person I have become accustomed to being labeled a “crazy cat lady”, but some of the rather bizarre lengths dog people will go to , like “neuticles” (Look it up!) surpass anything I have seen in the cat world.
One small caveat I had considered recommending this book to a young middle-schooler who wants to be a veterinarian, but there are a few incidents that would prevent me from giving it an unqualified “G” rating. Parents might want to preview the book for younger readers.
Since this is a collection of short pieces, each only a page or two long, The Accidental Veterinarian is perfectly designed for those times when you just have a few minutes to kill and would like something to entertain you. That is how I intended to read the book, but when I began to read I found it so engaging that I sat down and polished it off in one afternoon. No matter how you approach it, though, if you like animals or just appreciate a warmly told tale of an “accidental” life choice, this book should be a good choice for you. Schott describes the animals he has treated as “endlessly fascinating, endlessly charming, endlessly appealing”; so is his book.
Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for an advance review copy of this book.
  • This short and sweet collection of anecdotes by Philipp Schott will have any animal lover chuckling as they read about dogs who love nothing more than eating rocks or the guide dog who tried to fool his human by avoiding the vet, but is sure to bring a tear to their eye with his accounts of doing the hardest part of his job, putting an animal to sleep. I understand that the book is made up of a collection of his blog posts, so fans of his blog may find little new material here, but as someone unfamiliar with him, I really did enjoy his combination of humor, good storytelling and practical advice. I'd happily recommend this book to any animal lover or to any young person thinking of becoming a vet.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.
  • The Accidental Veterinarian is a collection of essays all grouped around topics important to the daily life in a veterinary practice. I wondered, as I read, if the essays had been first published in a blog or as a weekly newspaper column. The essays deal with important and interesting topics in animal care, and I learned a lot from them. I would have liked to see more inclusion of actual animal stories, real patients. There was some of that, especially in the last part of the book, and I particularly enjoyed them.
  • While this was not filled with the kind of animal/Vet stories I was hoping for, it was packed with knowledge and wisdom from a seasoned Veterinarian. Filled with advice on many different topics, it was much more of a behind the scenes look at a Veterinarian’s office. Everyone that has a pet, no matter how educated about pet care, will be able to take away a new tidbit of information from this informative book. Thank you to ECW and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
  • Dr. Schott's tales from his many years as a veterinarian are at times hilarious and at times poignant, and they are never dull. You don't have to be looking for solutions to a specific pet problem or be an animal lover in general to enjoy this book; he is a skilled and entertaining writer, and the short story format makes for a quick and delightful read.

The fact that Dr. Schott reluctantly entered the profession, one which is typically populated by people who have wanted to be vets all their lives, makes his tales that much more unique. His perspective on the human condition is as valuable as the diagnoses he provides for the animals under his care, and it is recommended reading from this persepective alone.
  • I like to read about vet life and I liked this book.
It was well written, full of stories and details.
A very good book that was both engaging and entertaining.
    Recommended!
many thanks to ECW Press and Netgalley for this ARC

Lonely Planet Iceland Travel Guide eBook Lonely Planet Carolyn Bain Alexis Averbuck Reviews

  • We had another guide book to Iceland for our recent trip in February 2018 and I'm glad we had two. The other guide was an older Rough Guide to Iceland. We were kind of surprised by the often lack of details in the Lonely Planet guide. For example, there are so many museums in Reykjavik and the guide book didn't list many of them. Many of the museums not listed aren't new and are established museums (for example the Kjarval Museum on Flokagata, which is a beautiful art museum that houses many of Johannes Kjarval's works). The book also didn't explain that for many museums, when you purchase the price for one, you get free admission to one of two others for a specific period of time. For example, if you visit the Listasafn (art museum near the harbor area that houses many works by Erro), you get free admission to the Asmundur Sveinsson sculpture museum, and to the Kjarval Museum for 24 hours from the purchase of the ticket. When you purchase a ticket to the National Gallery art museum, you get free admission to two other art museums in the area as well (there are so many wonderful art museums in the Reykjavik area). When you purchase a ticket to the National History Museum you get free admission to the Culture House in downtown Reykjavik that you can use within a week of the purchase of the one. I didn't see the Saga Museum listed, which is a fun Viking museum in the harbor area where you can play dress up with Viking costumes at the end. And I didn't see the Halldor Laxness Museum in nearby Mossfellsbaer mentioned. Laxness is one of the important authors of Iceland and this museum is on the way to Thingvellir National Park from Reykjavik if you have a rental car. While the travel guide explains how to find the Reykjavik swimming pools, it doesn't mention things like that you can purchase a pass for 10 visits for under 5000 ISK to certain pools (Sundhollin for example that we frequented often during our 10 day stay in Reykjavik). I felt that the details on restaurants in the area weren't the greatest. For example the Sea Baron restaurant (saegreifinn) in the harbor area, which was our favorite fish restaurant, with excellent excellent food, didn't have any explanation of the quirky founder of the restaurant. This place has a bit of history that's worth looking up (and they have free coffee which is great and also wasn't mentioned). I realize restaurants are popping up and going out of business all the time, but you'd think some of the established ones with history would have better write ups. While yes, this is a decent guidebook, I just felt they could have done a better job with this one.
  • Super disappointed in this book. We spent a week in Iceland and the only place that it had any value for us at all was on the South Coast. Food recommendations were not very good. Many places we went weren't even mentioned, and if they were there were limited directions to getting there. It seemed that the focus was on all of the hottest spots. Lonely Planet used to provide a lot of information for people looking for things off the beaten path as well and that was sorely lacking. Not likely to purchase another Lonely Planet based on this experience.
  • Iceland may be a challenging destination to write a guidebook for. Regardless, I found Lonely Planet Iceland to be only somewhat useful in helping to plan a recent trip. This has not been my experience with Lonely Plant guides in the past, which I found to be better.

Most of the information appeared to be accurate and was somewhat useful, and the guide's real value may be more apparent if you are planning a trip that lasts over a week, during the summer (I was only there for 4 days in March); ... Regardless, my issues with the guide came down to this - - Reviews of specific sites or establishments seemed to start with the assumption that everything was awesome, even when it was not. Example - The town of Vik is described as a "booming hub for a very beautiful portion of the south coast". While this may have some truth to it, and every traveler's perception is obviously going to be different, I found everything in Vik to be set-up a way that takes advantage of a HUGE supply and demand disconnect. (e.g. $350/ night for a very basic hotel room, not in the busy season; only 2-3 restaurant choices in town with 45-60 min waits for a table, entree like a basic pizza or Chinese chicken and rice for one @ $30+, etc.. in VERY basic establishments... and really no apparent "local" dishes.) This isn't intended as a review of Vik as a destination.. and I would not necessarily steer someone to another town if they wanted to visit the area... but it is an example where the guide could have done better, ... which seemed to be repeated throughout.

Restaurant reviews vs reality were similar for all of the places that we tried in Reykjavik.

There are also very positive-sounding reviews for the hotels immediately adjacent to the Blue Lagoon (and, by association ,the idea of staying in the that immediate location). In this case, we only visited the area and did not stay overnight; but I can't imagine that a hotel near the Blue Lagoon would good choice for any type of traveler.

Bottom-line - Go to Iceland.. maybe even buy this book.. just modulate your expectations.
  • This was more of a book for when you get there rather than planning the trip. Once we were on the road this book was fun to follow along with cause we found some cool stuff in towns we would have normally blasted past.
Places to stay change daily, and WiFi is everywhere, so use travel apps for that stuff. Will definitely take this book on my next trip to Iceland.
  • If you are traveling to Iceland and want to explore on your own instead of taking tours this is a great book to take with you. It covers all regions of Iceland in depth although it does not always have them in a logical order as if you were doing them along the ring road in a circle. There are many travel tips along with meal and lodging suggestions. There are some photos of major attractions although it's not as colorful as their "Iceland's Ring Road Road Trips" book. We bought them both for our upcoming trip to Iceland and we're glad we did.
  • Bought this as a companion to all the blogs I researched prior to my trip to Iceland. Lonely Planet books are so thorough that we would be driving through a small town that nobody had blogged about but this guide had information about said town. I highly recommend it as a supplement to using the internet.

"I'm using this as the primary textbook for a Deep Learning course I'm designing right now for the University of Washington professional/continuing education program. I'll also assign readings from the Goodfellow et al. text, but Chollet's book is a more practical way to get started. He is also the author of the Keras framework; it's great to get advice "straight from the horse's mouth".

Overall this book is more about practical techniques and python code (in Keras) than about deep learning math/theory. This is probably what the majority of readers are looking for. It's a great synthesis of the most important techniques now (start of 2018), which is hard to get just from reading papers.

I would recommend complementing this book with two others:

1) as mentioned above: Deep Learning (Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series)
2) Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn and TensorFlow: Concepts, Tools, and Techniques to Build Intelligent Systems"

Interest in mindfulness and contemplative thought is growing among Christians, and it's time to consider the place of contemplative prayer within the field of counseling. Can contemplative prayer be integrated into therapeutic work? Can it in fact serve as a foundation on which to build a new approach to counseling? In Contemplation and Counseling Gregg Blanton presents a new paradigm for integrating contemplative prayer with counseling practice. He contends that contemplative prayer can illuminate the purposes of counseling and suggest interventions that help us accomplish these goals. This paradigm builds an alliance between science, theology, and Christian contemplative thought to create a dynamic approach to counseling and balance various dimensions of the human person emotion, cognition, and action. And by recognizing the power of both words and silence, it harmonizes their functions. Based on this integrative foundation, Blanton offers eleven fundamental interventions to fit the needs of clients (including silence, empathy, and teaching contemplative prayer) and a practical four-stage process for helping clients change, using examples from his own counseling experience and from the Bible. Ultimately, contemplative prayer leads us to the healing power of love. How we view our clients, the ways that we relate with them, and the strategies that we use to help them change are all informed by our loving search for God in contemplative prayer. Particular topics include
  • how Christian contemplation compares with therapeutic uses of mindfulness
  • insights from interpersonal neurobiology understood in light of Scripture
  • psychological and spiritual benefits of lectio divina and centering prayer
  • how practicing contemplative prayer can help counselors develop traits that correlate with positive client outcomes
  • when and how to teach contemplative practices to clients
  • the role of the body, emotions, conscious and unconscious mind, and behavior in contemplative practice and counseling

"If humans are truly made in the image of God then there is necessarily a pious aspect to their make-up, their troubles, and to their recovery. P. Gregg Blanton, professor of psychology and human services at Montreat College since 1997, founder of the Center for Contemplation and Marriage, and active therapist in private practice, has interestingly drawn in contemplative prayer as part and parcel for helping others gain/regain well-being. This is all laid out in his brand new 232 page paperback, "Contemplation and Counseling: An Integrative Model for Practitioners". This volume is primarily for the sanative specialists, drawing from the mindfulness approaches of Kabat-Zinn and Siegel, as well as the centering prayer pathway of Meninger, Pennington and Keating. But it moves into the author's own direction.

In "Contemplation and Counseling" Blanton's contention "is that the Christian contemplative heritage provides counselors with a clear perspective on the three components of counseling: (1) a useful understanding of the client's situation, (2) guidance for establishing a helping relationship, and (3) effective interventions for resolving the client's problem" (17). To get to this three-fold conclusion that author unpacks what contemplative prayer is, shows how it can and does fit into therapy, the reason Christian counselors needs to practice contemplative prayer for themselves, and the ways this approach enhances counseling sessions and beyond.

Most of the book encircles and investigates seven qualities: presence, openness, attention, acceptance, compassion, resonance, and love. On occasion the author will add aspects to these qualities; but they remain central deciphering tools through the volume when looking at each angle of counseling and counselor. There is a very helpful description and definition of love in the final chapter that moves beyond a simple "feel-good-ism".

Since I'm not a counseling professional, I found the book a bit tricky here and there. But I was able to follow along, and get the point and practice the author was gunning for. My only real complaint is that I felt the theological and exegetical sides of the book were light, and at times slightly off-base. I recommend the book for Christians trained as helping specialists in psychology, psychotherapy, and counseling.

My thanks to IVP who sent me a free copy of the book on my request. And my thanks that they have given me the liberty to voice an honest review, no strings attached."
